STONYFORD, CA (June 7) — The three-year sound education effort at a large Northern California dual-sport ride was a huge success. On May 20/21, trail enthusiasts showed up at the 2006 SheetIron 300 Dual Sport Ride with exhaust systems that comply with the state's 96 dBA sound limit for off highway vehicles (OHV) used on public lands. The event is hosted by the Oakland Motorcycle Club (OMC) and is staged from the Colusa County Fairgrounds located in the rural town of Stonyford.

The FMF/BRC Sound Testing Program for OHVs has operated the sound check station for the last few years as part of OMC's requirement that event participants use sound compliant exhaust systems. This outreach is important since the tour includes system trails that transverse the Mendocino National Forest and paved roads in local townships and counties.

Don Amador, western representative for the BlueRibbon Coalition, said, "I think our collective efforts to address excessively loud OHVs have been a huge success at this event. Open class 4-strokes firing up their engines with racing exhaust systems at O-dark thirty have become a thing of the past at this event."

"The vast majority of riders are showing up at the tech station with new generation sound compliant exhaust systems. I think that strict enforcement of the sound limit as been the key to our success at the SheetIron 300. Off-roaders now realize that the future of the sport depends on their commitment to becoming members of Team Stealth," Amador said.

"OMC should be commended for making this commitment to the sound education and enforcement effort. The difference it has made at this event is palpable," Amador concludes.
