Malcolm Smith was personally on hand to visit with interested riders who came to this event. Staff from the FMF Racing/BlueRibbon Coalition Sound Testing Program for Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) were on site to perform courtesy sound checks to help inform the public regarding the new 96dBA sound limit in California. Ray Kidd, a law enforcement ranger from the Los Padres National Forest, and Scott Sinclair, president of Off-Highway Solutions, were also on hand to help with sound testing and to explain proper trail manners. Maps of riding areas were distributed too. Technical experts from FMF Racing were at the event to help repack blown out mufflers or to show the latest in quiet exhaust technology. Malcolm's staff also had the scoop on full-featured off-road, dual sport riding, and road riding tours around the region and the world Here is the data from some of the OHVs tested: 2004 KTM 525EXC with stock exhaust - 94.4dBA. 2000 Honda XR650R with Pro Circuit T-4 - 100.5dBA, 2002 KTM400EXC with original FMF Q series 97.1dBA with worn out packing - after repacking 94.7dBA. 2003 Kawasaki KLX400 - Big Gun Quiet Series without quiet tip - 97.8dBA. 2003 Honda XR 50 (bored out to 118cc) with Two Brothers exhaust -92.4dBA. 2003 Suzuki MSR/Team Suzuki GNCC Replica Dual-Sport DRZ400 with Yoshimura exhaust - 94.8dBA. 2004 KTM 625 SXC with stock exhaust - 92.5dBA. Don Amador, western representative for the BlueRibbon Coalition, said, "It really helps the sport to have famous riding heroes like Malcolm Smith out on the front lines advocating for quiet motorcycles as a viable method to reduce user conflicts and protect the sport." "Public education days like the one today are an important tool in a national effort to inform OHV enthusiasts about the need to comply with exhaust noise limits and other land use laws. Riding quiet really does make a difference and will, in fact, help keep recreation facilities open for decades to come," Amador concludes. # # # The BlueRibbon Coalition is a national recreation group that champions responsible use of public lands.
