BRC Board Member and Long-Time Recreation Advocate Pens Article for Prestigious Law Textbook

LAKESIDE, CA (January 11, 2012) - John Stewart, BlueRibbon Coalition Board member and long-time access advocate, has written an article for the Natural Resources Law program at the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law. http://law.du.edu/index.php/enrlp
The article, advocating recreation inclusion in public lands management policy, will appear in the Natural Resources Law 2nd Edition, authored by Jan Laitos. The publication is designed for classroom use in U.S. law schools across the country.
"It is an honor to have an article selected for publication. I believe this represents the beginning of an era of change in litigation and management, "Stewart said. Stewart makes the point that recreation has surged on public lands since the post-World War II era began and management policies have not kept up. His article points to the inconvenient fact that recreation is growing in popularity while recreational access to public lands is decreasing. "Changes to laws governing wilderness and endangered species are needed to support a balanced conservation goal," Stewart said. "There are no quick and easy answers. It is going to take time, effort, and pain. I hope my contribution can move us toward a better balance in the future."
In addition to his involvement with BRC, Stewart has served in various capacities in the United Four Wheel Drive Associations, California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs and Tierra del Sol Four Wheel Drive Club of San Diego, California. Stewart is a driving force behind 4x4Wire.com and muirnet.net, two important recreation websites. Stewart also participated on Collaborative Action Team (CAT) with Inyo National Forest on travel management and forest plan revision. The CAT received a "Spirit of the Inyo" award from the Inyo Forest Supervisor for participation in developing a "community based" alternative for travel management.
Stewart said; "Advocating access to public lands carries a responsibility to be part of the solution for managing the lands."
