Got Game?

I preface this column with the honest truth that I'm one of those guys who has never really been into the game of golf. It is a game I simply have not understood. For those of you who do understand and enjoy the game, I tip my hat. By my way of thinking, everything seems goofy with golf. The scoring is backwards and unlike a normal game like basketball, golf is a game where a "fowl" is a good thing. An avid golfer friend even once told me that, "Golf is the only game that seems like the more you practice, the worse you get."

So, as you can imagine, I don't usually make a habit of watching golf on television. That is, of course, unless I want to take advantage of the excellent background-noise-cancelling effect it provides for a long and restful nap. From time to time I have mused to my wife that television golf announcers would not make good preachers. However, their soothing voices do work well for when I am working on something else that requires my full concentration.

That said, I was working on some BlueRibbon issues from home over the Labor Day weekend (really, I was). For the benefit of my personal focus, I decided to tune the television to a golf game for background ambiance. Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods were partnered for the last round, and I made the mistake of watching for a few moments. I got nothing of my intended project completed because I ended up watching the most awesome game of golf I have ever seen. (Of course, since I'm usually sleeping, I've never really watched a game.)

These guys were relentless! Vijay would make an incredible drive from an impossible circumstance and Tiger would shake his head and match it. It was putt for putt the whole time. There was every kind of fowl you can think of from birdies to eagles and not a bogey anywhere. (Incidentally, "bogey" is the only golf term that makes sense to me in that it sounds like a bad thing and kind of is if you are a pro golfer or a fighter pilot.) I tell you, these guys had game. You could have added up the scores of the rest of the players rounding out the top five and not match the individual score either of these two had in the end! I was hopelessly riveted to the tube the entire game.

Now, I told you all of that so I can tell you this--Right to the last putt, Vijay never gave up... he made Tiger beat him. He gave it his best shot, and he walked off the course knowing that.

One won and one lost, but both are champions because neither one gave up.

Now, that is what I'm talkin' about! If you haven't figured it out by now, I really admire those who just don't give up. That's why I love working here. BlueRibbon Coalition may win some, and we may lose some, but more importantly, we are not going to give up.

So why tell a golf story? Is there a major epiphany in this story for all of you?

Well... Yes, I guess there is. Don't be turning on the golf game when there is work to be done. Get out there and get a trail inventoried or make that phone call or write that letter.
