We wanted to let our members and supporters know about the House Natural Resources Subcommittee meetings happening this week that are related to public lands. First up this week is an Oversight Hearing on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. The House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation will hold an oversight hearing on "Impediments to Public Recreation on Public Lands." We wanted to let our members and supporters know about the House Natural Resources Subcommittee meetings happening this week that are related to public lands.

First up this week is an Oversight Hearing on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. The House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation will hold an oversight hearing on "Impediments to Public Recreation on Public Lands."

On Thursday, May 9th, the Subcommittee will hold a hearing that will discuss legislation aimed at access for  hunting and fishing on public lands and designation of a 55,000-acre national monument in southeastern New Mexico.

We've pasted information for both hearings below. You can also check out the proceedings on the legislative hearing website. The live video webcasts begin approximately 10 minutes prior to the start of each meeting.

Subject: Legislative Hearing - May 9, 2013

On Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in room 1324 Longworth House Office Building, the Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation will hold a legislative hearing on the following bills:

  • H.R. ___ (Benishek), To direct Federal public land management officials to exercise their authority under existing law to facilitate use of and access to Federal public lands for fishing, sport hunting, and recreational shooting, and for other purposes.
  • H.R. 586 (Young), To provide for certain improvements to the Denali National Park and Preserve in the State of Alaska, and for other purposes. "Denali National Park Improvement Act" 
  • H.R. 995 (Pearce), To establish a monument in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, and for other purposes. "Organ Mountains National Monument Establishment Act" 
  • H.R. 1411 (Huffman), To include the Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands in the California Coastal National Monument as a part of the National Landscape Conservation System, and for other purposes. "California Coastal National Monument Expansion Act of 2013"

The Grand County Council has identified over 100 miles of road closures in its proposed Public Lands Initiative (PLI) plan to be submitted to Representative Rob Bishop. This proposal is scheduled to be voted on by the end of the month, so it is imperative for you to take action today! Utah's Grand County, home to Moab's world class OHV trails, has been participating in Congressman Rob Bishop's Public Lands Initiative, a plan to resolve some of Utah's most contentious public lands issues, including Wilderness and OHV use.

Federal Plan Threatens OHV Access In Nevada Desert
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the Las Vegas area is currently fronting a draft plan that could eliminate or greatly restrict both casual and event-based OHV recreation on approximately 3 million areas in Southern Nevada. The draft Resource Management Plan (RMP) creates an unjustified risk that might preclude "dry washes" from being designated as OHV routes. The elimination of dry or sand washes from subsequent project level travel management plans could functionally close the desert if they are not capable of being designated as routes, because motorized travel would be "limited to designated roads and trails."

CALIFORNIA - Forest Service To Hold Open House On Off-Highway Vehicle Use
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will host an open house to discuss Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) use on designated routes within the Lake Tahoe Basin on Thursday, April 2, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Forest Supervisor's office at 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150.
