We wanted to update our members and supporters on yesterday's subcommittee hearing and let them know of some additional goings on in our Nation's Capital related to public lands. Update on House Natural Resources Subcommittee Legislative Hearings

We wanted to update our members and supporters on yesterday's subcommittee hearing and let them know of some additional goings on in our Nation's Capital related to public lands. The second thing of note is a hearing on Thursday, April 18, 2013, that will discuss legislation that will designate new Wilderness, promote a copper mine in Nevada and streamline the permitting of grazing on public lands.

There are actually four bills on the docket, we've pasted details below. Also Phil Taylor, a reporter at E&E News, a Washington, DC, based natural resource news outlet has a story on that:

                  Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation

Subject:  Legislative Hearing - April 18, 2013

On Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in room 1334 Longworth House Office Building, the Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation will hold a legislative hearing on the following bills:

  • H.R. 657 (Labrador), To amend the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 to improve the management of grazing leases and permits, and for other purposes. "Grazing Improvement Act"
  • H.R. 696 (Horsford), To designate the Wovoka Wilderness and provide for certain land conveyances in Lyon County, Nevada, and for other purposes. "Lyon County Economic Development and Conservation Act"
  • H.R. 934 (McClintock), To amend the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act related to a segment of the Lower Merced River in California, and for other purposes.
  • H.R. 993 (Bishop), To provide for the conveyance of certain parcels of National Forest land to the city of Fruit Heights, Utah. "Fruit Heights Land Conveyance Act"

CALIFORNIA & NEVADA - Tahoe NF to Host Open Houses on Forest Roads Analysis
The Tahoe National Forest will host two public open houses in October to discuss the forest roads system and look at the relationship between roads and various resource impacts. The open houses are part of engaging the public in Subpart A of the U.S. Forest Service's 2005 Travel Management Rule. Subpart A is an analysis of the forest's road system. The open houses are an opportunity for the forest to share information and the public to help inform the ongoing analysis.

The Sawtooth National Recreation Area would like to invite the public to provide further discussion regarding summer travel opportunities within the Big Wood River watershed of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
