Mobilizing Trail Access Forces for The John Penton Movie

Hey BRC members of the single-track motorcycle persuasion,

Do you want to be part of a really cool project and do something for the cause?

Filmmaker and moto-historian Todd Huffman, whose credits include "The Motocross Files" and many others, has a goal to tell the story of John Penton. The American Motorcyclists Association's (AMAHall of Fame credits Penton as:

"one of the most influential figures in the development of off-road motorcycle racing in America during the 1960s and '70s. A national champion rider, Penton went on to develop a legendary brand of off-road motorcycles that bore his name. Thousands of riders learned to ride on Pentons. He also founded Hi-Point, a boot and apparel company that for a time boasted over half the sales in the U.S. market."

Narration will be by motorcyclist/singer Lyle Lovett, who once swept floors in a Penton dealership and says he feels honored to participate.

But making movies isn't cheap, and Huffman is using Kickstarter.com to raise $275,000 to make "The John Penton Story" happen. To learn more about the project, how Kickstarter works and how you can help go here.

After visiting the Kickstarter website, Tom Thomas, from PAPA approached Todd with an idea; promote the issue of public lands access in his film by weaving the topic into the John Penton Story, and we would help with the fund raising by spreading the word. Todd talked it over with his group who agreed that it would be a good theme to add to the film.

Hopefully people will embrace the concept of weaving public lands access into the story, or at the least supporting it, and send a pledge donation, no matter how small, to the film project.  Every little bit helps. Please watch the short promotional film narrated by Lyle Lovett and read the story posted on the web site and do what feels right to you. Tom said, "who knows, maybe a 2012 version of "On Any Sunday" is in the making."

On June 18, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee passed S 486 "Preserving Access to Cape Hatteras Beaches Act." We are indebted to North Carolina Senators' Richard Burr and Kay Hagan for the leadership they have shown by first introducing the original bill S 486 and then by the enormous effort they and their staffs have put forward to arrive at a compromise that was supported by the full committee yesterday. The Senators understand the access issues for those who live, work and visit the CHNSRA. The Senators have fought for and are continuing to fight for a solution to these issues that will provide a proper balance between resource protection and recreational use at the nation's first National Seashore Recreational Area.

Today's Land Use Update was a blast to write. There are a lot of really great things happening to protect your recreational access. Among the items is news that the House passed the provision offered by Congressman Paul Cook  that would save the Johnson Valley OHV Area (A.K.A the Hammers). The provision now moves to the Senate. (Cook served as an Marine infantry officer, and during his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts) Also in this update are two items of legal sweetness. Sweetness in the form of ...

We received an urgent action alert from the folks at the Outer Banks Preservation Association (OBPA). The OBPA folks are trying to keep one of the last remaining Outer Bank beaches open for vehicles. The U.S. Senate is considering a bill that would stop the National Park Service from closing Cape Hatteras National Seashore to vehicle access. BRC's Greg Mumm is working with the OPBA on this issue and said it is distressing to see the wealthy foundations treat both visitors and local recreational users in such a shabby way. Mumm noted;‬‬
